A few weeks ago we went on an RSPB organised 'Walk in the Dark' event, as dusk approached we met a small group of people and two volunteers, bats were already flying overhead, causing excitement among us all.

After being provided with a bat detector and UV torch and given a quick lesson on how to use them, we set off into the reserve

Into the woods

As we explored, we switched on our UV torches and were mesmerized by the array of colours - red, purple, white, and orange. These were just a few of the colours we witnessed as the once crystal-clear pond turned murky!

Here is Biofluorescence

A natural process where organisms absorb light at one wavelength and emit it at a different wavelength which appears as a different colour and makes it appear to glow!

Time to Use the Bat Detector!

These devices detect the bats' echolocation, which is the sound they use to navigate and locate prey. Humans are unable to hear this naturally due to its high frequency.

It was thrilling to be able to distinguish between two distinct species:

Common Pipistrelle at 45 - 47 kHz

Soprano Pipistrelle at 55 kHz
